Poverty

by Robert Hunter

Book is in EXCELLENT + condition. No Dust Jacket

  • Appalled by the misery of the depression of 1893, the author decided to become a social worker. His most important book was Poverty (1904), the first general statistical survey of America's poor.
  • Paraphrased from the Preface: The main objects of this volume are: to define poverty and estimate its extent around 1904, and describe some of its evils and ramifications to the poor and to society in general. Declaring himself a Socialist (1905), he was elected to the first executive board of the Intercollegiate Socialist Society. Becoming a Socialist, he ran for public office several times. In 1914, he left the party disillusioned because Socialism had failed to prevent the outbreak of World War 1. By the end of his life, he had turned right-wing, repudiated the New Deal, and wrote Revolution (1940), which rejected Marxism and revolutions.
  • McMillan Company, 1912 of 1904 copyright, 382 pages
  • Clean pages and tightly bound. Very little shelf wear for age, spine still straight.
